A bit of premier league statistics

Every year there are voices about uneven treatment of teams by referees. So I decided to track them a bit this season. So far it's too early to discover any bias from particular referees since they have generally only refereed 1 match to a team which is not good to establish a trend.

E.g. I did a little research into last three seasons and saw that Howard Webb, frequently dubbed as a Manchester United referee, is probably more of a Liverpool referee. He has only shown 1,5 cards to Liverpool pr. match, a lot more to their opponents. Also interesting that in the last 3 seasons he has been the referee in 4 of Liverpools matches against Manchester United and 4 of their matches against Arsenal.

But like I said, that's not what I'm gonna do now. This time around I will only produce these numers for August 2010:

Most penalties for:
Blackburn 2
Wigan 2

Most penalties against:
Norwich 3

Most yellow cards:
Arsenal 11

Most yellow cards to an opponent:
Manchester United 14

Most red cards:
Arsenal 3

Most red cards to an opponent:
Newcastle 3

Referee that has shown most yellow cards:
Phil Dowd 21

Referee that has shown most red cards:
Martin Atkinsson 2
Howard Webb 2

Referee that has awarded most penalties:
Lee Mason 3
